My BIG Experiment With Time!

Answer this  –

Are 24 hours in a day sufficient?

Maybe yes? Or no? For most of the people, it will be no.

Even I feel so most of the times. But why?

I unknowingly multitasked. I procrastinated. I had no clarity before picking up tasks. I estimated incorrectly. I was not focused.

Multiple reasons 😅

So I started experimenting with something new from the 1st week of March.

Time tracking! ⏳

“Ha! I know you do that, Pritesh! Tell me something new”

Nope!

Earlier I used to just track my activities. Took it to the next level now 🚀

I started calculating the number of hours or minutes I spent at every single thing I do while I am awake – work, daily chores, entertainment and so on.

Here’s my report for this week 📈

Top 3 things that I spent my time on –

1) Visit to my sister’s place (family time)

2) Reading book

3) Fitness (gym, swimming, cycling and walking)

And I thought I spent the most time working on my household chores!

See?
We live in such a delusion when we don’t track things!

So no more complaints that I need to manage everything alone at home 🙂

My Observations From This Experiment –

➡️ Better Task Allocations – Now I precisely know the amount of time my regular tasks take. So I can fit some random things in between the breaks to maximize the efficiency.

➡️ Focused Work – I do not share these things with anyone. It’s for myself but I don’t want to show myself as someone who takes too much time to complete things. So I naturally started being more focused to keep that number on the lower side.

➡️ No Guilt Trips – We are humans and we cannot be productive all the time. I know that it doesn’t help in stretching time when I know I am not feeling productive. Better to take a walk, read books, play games or simply sleep.

➡️ Awareness of Time Suckers – I know where I waste the highest amount of time. I don’t plan to reduce it but I am fully aware of where my time is exactly going.

➡️ More Free Time – I started getting a lot more free time to relax or spend on things that actually matter to me. It’s like being mindful of all things we do throughout the day.

➡️ Quick Summary Using AI – I can just feed the data to AI and accurately analyze a big span of time – a month or a year, maybe?

Overall, it’s a good realization hit.

Companies should really stop caring about the number of hours.

Nobody, literally nobody works productively more than 4 hours a day.

✍ TODAY’S ACTION ITEM

Do you need to do this?

Not at all. This is not natural and sustainable. This is madness ❌

But should you try?

Definitely yes. Take this as an experiment for a day or week and see how it allows you to become aware of yourself ✅

✔ WHAT I DID THIS WEEK

Spent a big chunk of my time helping a client with some important things – competitor research, creating some necessary documents, T&C pages, refining portfolio and so on.

Published a video. And 1 post.

Next big thing – I designed some sections for my letter website. I really love how deeply I get to understand my company’s products when I build actual projects.

Vision is big and these are just steps towards that. And no, not targeting millions of readers and dollars pouring in! 😉

Right now, it’s pretty basic but I am excited to see it down the line.

Completed 50% of this book that I picked this week – Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days. The book started with Greg describing how he is an indoor person and how he intends to spend his summer vacation playing video games. But his mother wants him to go outdoors more often. Hilarious as usual.

Talking about the office, it was a roller coaster ride this week till the end of the week. Many unexpected hiccups and random things kept coming!
